I have a report for samples that I have collected and submitted and the report states that the samples contain "no compound present." What does this mean?

A: The lab needs specific layers of certain materials to analyze. In the case of a report stating "no compound present," please call the lab as specific instructions for sampling may be given, or it may be necessary for a technologist to collect the samples on your behalf.

As a home owner, can I collect samples and submit them to your lab for analysis; if so, what precautions should I take while sampling?

A: Yes, you can collect samples and submit them to our lab for analysis. When you are collecting samples, you must minimize the disturbance to the material you are sampling. You can do this by spraying the material with some water from a mister. Also, the area should not be in a high traffic area where the now damaged material may be disturbed. You should also wear appropriate personal protective equipment, including a P100 class respirator, safety glasses and nitrile or silicon gloves. The samples should be collected and placed in an air tight bag with a label of the location and what material has been sampled. Specific details can be found in the WorkSafeBC "Safe Work Practices for Handling Asbestos" by clicking here.
